When we begin December, we will be discussing folk tales. We will be focusing on The Gingerbread Man. If you have any copies at home that we may borrow, for about two weeks, that would be great! We are continuing Unit 2 in math which is working on addition sums to 10. Use the spring math sheets, that come home in the Friday Folder, as extra practice. You can make-up worksheets using those facts and time your child for two minutes, just like we do in class. It’s quick and they really enjoy trying to beat the clock.

I’ll be contacting the parents/guardians on my PTO approved list this week, to find out if anyone will be available next Friday afternoon (October 25th) to help with a project. We are beginning Unit 2 in math which is working on addition sums to 10. This works nicely with our Spring Math Program (strictly math fact fluency). On Thursday last week the class met the goal in adding to sums of six so, this week we will begin timed tests with sums to 12. Use the worksheets that come home as practice. Weekly Update Sept.30-Oct.4,2019
Important information: Each story in your child’s text book will usually, last two school weeks. Exceptions are short weeks and then as the year progresses, we may shorten the coverage as they become more proficient. So, the first week of the story, we will cover phonics and spelling and introduce the High Frequency Words for the story. The second week we read the story, work on comprehension skills and writing/grammar skills. There will NOT be a new spelling list this week, or a spelling test. Your child will not be bringing home the green notebook only the blue one. They only need to read those words each night to improve their fluency of the words (reading them on sight with out sounding them out.) The comprehension test will be on Thursday this week due to the Pep Rally on Friday.

Your child will bring home their text book to practice the story on Mondays. Since tonight is the first time, if you have anything to cover the book, that will be great. Paper grocery bags work the best, although sturdy wrapping paper works, too. The stretchy covers don’t really fit our books unless you have the large kind. The small ones damage our book’s bindings because they don’t allow the book to fully close and they don’t stretch out enough. I realize you may not have the materials to cover the books tonight, so my goal is to have them covered next week by Tuesday. If you should need a book cover, let me know and I will provide one for your child.

Spring Math is a program to build your child’s math fact fluency. You will receive a packet in the Friday Folder each week to monitor your child’s weekly progress. We are only working on sums to six. Practicing with flash cards at home will help them reach their goal more quickly.

This is also a friendly reminder now that books and notebooks are coming home, please be sure to have any kind of drink for your child in a separate lunch bag or snack holder, not the backpack.

Your child may wear jeans with any Spirit Week themed outfit. No masks or wigs will be permitted. If your child is not dressing in the theme, they must be in regular school dress code.
*Spirit Week Themes
Monday (Day 1) Computer class; *Wear a blue shirt; Read the words in the blue notebook (High Frequency Words) and read “Sam, Come Back!” Be sure to send the text book back to school whether it has a cover on it or not.

Tuesday (Day 2) Phys. Ed. Class; *High School, College or Professional Team Day; Read the H.F.W.

Wednesday (Day 3) Music class; *Western Day; Read the H.F.W., Comprehension test Thursday.

Thursday (Day 4) Art class; *Throw Back Day, dress in your favorite decade; H.F.W. test tomorrow.

Friday (Day 5) Library class; *Spartan Day/American Pride
*Please check the Friday Folder for important papers to keep; then sign and date the front sheet of the folder. Send the folder back to class the next school day.

Happy Fall!

Weekly Update Sept.23-27,2019
Important information: Remember on Meet the Teacher Night I mentioned we will be going slow so we may then go fast? Well, buckle your seat belts! Beginning this week the children will be instructed in whole group, small group and individual meetings with me. They successfully completed 20 minutes of on-task learning, working independently as well as in small groups this month. I’m so proud of them!
These are the changes you will begin seeing starting today:
*A green notebook will be coming home with pre-tested spelling words for each story throughout the year. It will come home (usually a Monday) with either a star on the page which equals all words spelled correctly, or words written in color by me. Those colored words will need to be written each night, 3 times each until the day of the test (which will be noted in the book by me). I will provide the paper for those corrections and you will sign the paper to indicate that you have checked the work and then return it to school the next day.
*A blue notebook will come home with the story high frequency words. Some words may be sounded out and others are sight words. These words are not to be written. They need to be read each night, perhaps practiced on flash cards or whatever works best for you. A few minutes every night will help with our work during the day. These words are cyclical, and will be repeated in each story going forward, so mastery of each story’s list is beneficial for each story going forward.
*Kid Writing! They will bring home a paper only if it has been checked by me. I address all corrections on these papers, with your child meeting privately with me to discuss their creation. In the beginning, I will focus on their letter/sound relationships, that’s all. Kid Writing is very revealing as to what sounds your child may or may not be hearing and speaking. I will not be addressing writing conventions, other than mentioning a sentence begins with a capital and ends with a mark. They will make many errors in this writing style in the beginning and into the mid-year. You must be patient. I am focused on developing the love of writing a “story”. The conventions and spelling come later. A journal may even be coming home soon with your child. I do not ever correct the journal. I read these stories and if I can’t, they read them to me….very proudly, and I make a big deal over every attempt. Once they finish one, they get another.
*Math work is mostly completed in school, all completed worksheets will come home, some days no paper work will go home. Your child should begin practicing adding to the sum of 6. That is our current goal. Flash cards are great practice, be sure they are reading the whole fact. Ex. “One plus four equals five”, not just giving the sum.
Any questions about any of this…please get in touch!

Monday (Day 4) Art class w/Ms. Pasco

Tuesday (Day 5) Library class w/Mrs. David

Wednesday (Day 6) Phys. Ed. class w/Mrs. Geidner

Weekly Update Sept. 16-20,2019

Important information: There will be a paid dress down day on Friday. Your child may wear sweats or jeans with a Spartan t-shirt, if they bring in a dollar donation. If your child is not participating, they must be in regular school dress code for the day.

Our class has been so marvelous at following all the SPARTY rules that they have earned 3 classroom rewards in 3 weeks of school! I have not had this happen in quite a long time! I’m so proud of them!!!

We have been doing a great job with our reading strategies and building stamina. The end of this week we will be up to 20 minutes of focused work time. We are just about ready to begin independent work and small group rotations. I didn’t send home the reading strategies last Friday to give the class some extra time discussing them before they go home. My new goal is to send them in this week’s Friday Folder.

Thank you for sending in your child’s activity schedules. I’ll send a note home in the T.H.F. the day before I show up. This will hopefully give you a heads up in case something comes up that your child won’t be able to make it that day.

Monday (Day 1) Computer class w/Mr. Leibig

Tuesday (Day 2) Phys. Ed. class w/Mrs. Geidner

Wednesday (Day 3) Music class w/Mrs. Schwartz

I am enjoying getting to know your child academically and socially! The children have “Wowed” me in many ways already. This week we will have the Dibels reading assessment. I have completed both math and reading assessments and I’m finalizing groupings this week. We are continuing to build our stamina and by the end of the week, we should be at 12 minutes of a focused work time! We are adding strategies to our reading wall. These strategies will be coming home in the Friday Folder this week so you will be able to refer to them at home. This will reinforce the strategies and strengthen their understanding. By the end of the month, we will be ready to move from teacher guided groups to individual work and small student groups to enhance their learning in both reading and math!

We had some mishaps with drinks last week, so again I’m going to ask that you do not send in any kind of drink in your child’s backpack. Please send it in a lunch box, because it is better insulated from being squished. They do have access to the water fountain in the classroom.

Please send me a schedule of your child’s fall sports/activities. I will ask for one for each season as the year progresses. I enjoy going to recitals etc., I always have so much fun!

Weekly Update Sept. 3-6,2019

Important information: Please return the FREE t-shirt order, from PTO, as quickly as possible. Our field trip isn’t until April but they need to get the orders in ASAP! Thank you if you’ve already sent it back!

Pictures will be taken at NSE on September 10th. Children must be in school dress code. Please refer to the student handbook if you are not sure about an outfit.

Please send in multiple books, with their names in them, for your child to read during the day. This is especially beneficial for our retelling activities. It helps your child when they have a familiar book that they have an established connection. It gives them confidence in retelling because they are already familiar with the words and pictures. Don’t worry if they are rumpled or torn or drawn upon. (That just means they were loved.) Ask your child about the 3 ways to read a book and you’ll understand the importance of a familiar, even memorized book. As always, contact me if you have any questions regarding this or anything else happening in our class.

As we complete our list of reading strategies; I will send home the list, so you will be able to refer to it and use the same vocabulary. This will benefit your child by hearing it at school and using it at home. Together we’ll make a great team!

Weekly Update August 26-30,2019

Important information: I hope everyone enjoyed the wonderful weather and had a safe, relaxing weekend!
Fasten your seat-belts, because first grade is a super-fun exciting time! I’m so excited that so many of you have joined class dojo! If you haven’t decided yet, no worries. You may join at any time during the school year, but there is no pressure to do so.

Just a reminder, please check all paperwork front and back before you return it. Often there are multiple places that need to be signed. It would be great if all paperwork could be returned by August 30th. Thanks to all the warriors who have sent them back to class!

I’m looking forward to getting to know your children better each day. The first week they will be learning new routines and finding new friends. We’ll get started right away discussing what we know, what we want to know and then get busy working on those strengths.

These weekly updates will be full of daily and future plans. I will provide tips and resources that will enable us to work together to best move your child forward. Also, I will be happy to hear from you if you have suggestions or would like to share with the class any areas of career expertise. Career planning is always better when the children get information from those that are doing the job. If you would be interested in speaking to the class about your job, there will be paperwork coming home shortly. Let’s give our kids real choices and hopefully represent our community with all the career paths available from service industry, military, the trades and college professions.
