Weekly Update for January 30-February 3, 2012

Important information: There will be a spelling pre-test on Wednesday and a test if needed on Thursday. The reading test will be on Friday this week.

A Valentine list for the class is coming home tonight. Please make sure to have a card for each student on the list. The cards need to be returned to school in time for our party which will be on Tuesday, February 14. The children may send them into school as soon as they have the list completed and they will be stored until the party day.

Our 100th day of school celebration will be on Tuesday! You do not need to do anything special for your child or send in anything. All planned activities will be taken care of in class.

Weekly Update for January 16-20, 2012

Important information: There will be a spelling test for list #10 on Friday.(No pretest this week.)

There will be a new cycle for our reading tests. They will no longer be every Friday. Beginning with this new story, "The Big Circle", we will have six days of instruction (school days, weekends not included) and I will test on the seventh day. You will have to check Take Home Folders for testing dates as well as relying on this weekly update to help keep you on track. The children will also, as I have mentioned in past updates, be reading everything on the reading test by themselves. Please make sure they are reading to you each night and that you are checking for understanding after each page they read. You need to ask them questions about the story order, what was the story mostly about, was the story true/real or was it a "could happen story" or make believe. These kinds of questions help your child with the understanding of the material which is an area of need for most of our class. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me for help in any way.

Scholastic Book orders were due today. There will be another in about two weeks.

Weekly Update for January 9-13, 2012

Important information: There will be a reading test for "Who Works Here?" on Friday. This is the last test I will be reading anything except directions to your child. The pace at which we are learning will be picking up now. It is very important to make sure your child is prepared for each day of school by having their reading work done each night. They must be reading to you every night in order to build their skills and get ready for newer ones. Please contact me if you have any concerns with studying skills for your child.

Weekly Update for January 3-6, 2012

Important information: There will be a test for spelling list #9 on Friday (no pretest will be given) and there will not be a reading test this week.

Don't forget to dress your child appropriately for outside recess. If the temperature is near 40 and dry they will be outside for 1/2 hour. Please make sure your child will be comfortable during that time.

Weekly Update for December 19-23, 2011

Important information: There will be a test for "The Farmer in the Hat" on Wednesday, December 21st. Your child will be reading the front page by themselves and I will be reading the back page for now. This will be changing in a few stories so make sure your child is reading every night. They should know all the words on the blue sheet and most on the yellow sheet. Practice by making sentences out of these words, it will help them for the fresh read tests that we take. Call or e-mail me with any concerns you have regarding this matter.

There will be no math homework this week!

Important information: There will be a spelling pretest on Thursday and a test if needed on Friday, no reading test this week. However, due to the holiday and shortened work week next week; we will test "The Farmer in the Hat" on Wednesday, December 21st.

Weekly Update for December 5-9, 2011

Important information: There will be a reading test for "a Big Fish for Max" on Friday. Please be sure to cover the new reading book.

We will be discussing folk tales for the next few weeks using "The Gingerbread Man" as our story. If you have any copies of this book and can send them in with your child it would be appreciated. We are going to compare and contrast the main characters and endings of the different versions that we find.

We do not have a gift exchange with boys and girls in first grade. Instead we ask that you donate a new or gently used item for the Hillside Animal Shelter. There will be a note in the Friday Folder with more details.

Weekly Update for November 28-December 2, 2011

Important information: We will be shopping for Santa's Workshop on Wednesday afternoon. If you plan to have your child participate, please send the money in an envelope marked with the names and amounts that they can spend. This makes shopping easier for your child and their adult helper.
There will not be a spelling pre-test this week. Due to the short week, the scored test will be given Friday.
We have a new reading book; please make sure your child has a book cover to ease the wear and tear of the traveling from school and home. Please take the time to have your child read to you each night. I know this time of year can be hectic but it is important to stick to a routine. Your child needs the practice to develop their accuracy, fluency and comprehension. These are the areas which make up their reading grades on the report card.

Weekly Update for November 21-24, 2011

Important information: We will not be starting any new reading stories this week. Please use this time to review all the words on the blue sheet and have your child read every day over the break to keep up with their skills.

There will be an early dismissal on Wednesday beginning the Thanksgiving Holiday Break!

When we return to school on November 29th, it will be "Day 1" on the rotation schedule. Our class will have gym so don't forget to have your child wear sneakers.

Weekly Update for November 14-18, 2011

Important information: We are continuing with our story "Animal Park". There will not be a spelling test this week only a reading test.

Beginning with book two in reading I will no longer be reading the front of the test to your child, they will be reading it all by themselves. I will continue to read only the back page to them through the entire second book. My goal is to have them reading their whole test, except for directions, by book three. Please be sure to be reading each night with your child and review all the words for each story as well. This will be good practice and it will keep good grades on these tests.

Due to the missed day on Friday our rotation days have changed; please check below so your child is prepared for each daily special.

Monday-(Day 3) Computer class w/Ms. Kraft. Study the high frequency word list for "Animal Park" and read the story. Complete the math worksheet side B for homework and the fact sheet, too.

Tuesday-(Day 4) Art class w/Mr. Baglin. Review the reading word list and read the story. Complete the math worksheets.

Weekly Update for November 7-11, 2011

Important information: We are beginning a new story this week, "Animal Park". There will be a spelling test this week but not a reading test. We will be getting a new book after this story. Please make sure you are studying the blue sheet words with your child because a new one will be coming home with the new book.

Reminder: There will be no school on Friday. When we return to school the next Monday (Nov. 14th) it will be Day 3 of the rotation cycle.

Report cards were sent home on Friday. I am very pleased with the work the children have done. Let's hope that we can continue with even greater success this marking period! You must sign the bottom portion of the report card, clip it and send back only the slip with your signature by this Thursday.

Important information: We are continuing the story this week, "A Fox and a Kit." There will be a reading test Friday.
A quick request for snack time- Do not send in powdered drink mix unless it is to be used for lunch. We only have 10 minutes for snack and a juice box/pouch or a drink of water is a more timely choice. Thank you for understanding.

Reminder: There will be an early dismissal on Friday; there will not be a need for you to send in a snack on that day. The Diabetes Walk will be on Friday morning and it will be a few laps around the high school track. Please dress your child in comfortable sneakers as we will all be walking regardless if your child has sent in a donation or contribution.

Weekly Update for October 3-7, 2011

Important information: We are continuing to work on "Big Blue Ox." There will not be a spelling test this week. The reading test will be on Friday. I am sending home a list of words that should be kept in a safe place. The words should be reviewed each night. Not all the words on the list will be sound out words. Some of the words are sight words. These words will help your child to become a better reader. They are from our text book and are the words that will be in each story in that book. A new list will come home with each new text book we receive this year.

Reminder: As long as the weather is dry the children go outside for recess. Please make sure your child is dressed properly to be comfortable for 30 minutes of outside activity.

Please remove the daily worksheets from your child's folder each night.

Monday-(Day 4) Art class w/Mr. Baglin. Study reading word list for "Big Blue Ox." There will not be any math homework tonight. The skill we worked on in class did not use a worksheet today. There will be a math test tomorrow on sides and angles of shapes, and reading charts in picture graph form.

Tuesday-(Day 5) Music class w/ Mrs. Schwartz. Review reading word list and read the story "Big Blue Ox." We had a math test today so there will be no homework!

Wednesday-(Day 1) Gym class w/ Ms. Brill. Review reading word list for "Big Blue Ox!" and read the story. Complete and return the math worksheet side "B" for homework. Remember to send library books in for book exchange tomorrow.

Thursday-(Day 2) Library Class w/ Mr. Demsko. Read and review the story "Big Blue Ox". Complete and return side "B" of the math worksheet.

Friday-(Day 3) Computer class w/Ms. Kraft. Check the Friday Folder for important papers and tests. Please sign the folder, remove the papers and return just the folder on Monday.

Weekly Update for Sept.26-30, 2011

Important information: This week we will begin a new story. There will be a spelling test this week. The reading test will be next week. Please cover the reading text book to keep it protected and in good shape for the next child who will be using it. Last week's tests will be coming home in this week's Friday Folder. The scores are on E-school book now.

Reminder: We will be collecting gently used children's books to give to needy families. If you can participate in this donation, send the books in a separate bag to make it easier for your child to take it to the final collection place within the school. Please make sure your child is reading something to you each night and practicing the word sheet that comes home on Monday. Keep those sheets in a special place or record the words in a book. Each new story is made up of the last story's words for constant review.

Wednesday-(Day 1) Gym class w/ Ms. Brill. Review reading word list for "Big Blue Ox!" and read the story. Study the spelling list for tomorrow's pre-test. Complete and return the math worksheet side "B" for homework.

Thursday-(Day 2) Library Class w/ Mr. Demsko. Read and review the story "Big Blue Ox". Check for spelling corrections. Please write them 3 times each and send them back to school. The test will be Friday for those students who need it. Complete and return side "B" of the math worksheet.

Weekly Update for Sept.19-23, 2011

Important information: We are finally on a regular schedule this week! Some new developments to make you aware of are: There will only be a new spelling list when we begin a new story, which will be every two weeks until further notice. The first week of the story we will receive spelling words and high frequency reading words to study for our story. We will work on building connections with previous information. We will read two decodable readers and begin the new story. We will end the week with a spelling test. The second week will be spelling reviews but no testing. They will use words in dictation sentences and continue to work on high frequency word recognition. The story in the text book will be reviewed daily working on your child's fluency. We will begin small group instruction to give your child a chance to work on needed reading strategies. There will be a test on Friday on the high frequency words, reading of brief sentences (not seen before but consisting of the high frequency words and spelling words from the week). The children will also be tested on their comprehension with a short multiple choice test in which I read the words and choices to them and they will select the answer.
This is the second week of work and review of "Pig in a Wig". The testing will be on Friday. There will not be any written spelling homework on the review week. All time should be focused on reading the story and working on comprehension and fluency.

Reminder: Please cover your child's reading text as it will be going back and forth and it will save much wear and tear on the cover. A simple brown bag from the grocery store works best and then your child can personalize it with their own art work.

The math home work now has a place at the bottom for you to initial that you have checked your child's homework. Thank you all for doing such a wonderful job so far this year. The whole class earned a perfect score on the last math test! That is something I hope we can repeat all year long!!

Weekly Update for Sept.12-16, 2011

Important information: Due to DIBEL's testing and Book Fair this week (our Book Fair shopping day is Tuesday afternoon), we still are not quite on schedule with our regular daily routine. I will be testing spelling from "Sam, Come Back!" today. We didn't get to it last week due to the school cancellation on Thursday. The test will not be scored towards your child's grade. It will serve as practice for this week's test which will count toward their spelling grade. Thursday will be the pre-test and Friday will be extra if anyone needs the extra day. The children are doing such a wonderful job despite our lack of a regular schedule. Next week everything should be smooth sailing. Thank you for sending your children prepared for each day. Please continue to review spelling words each night and to read with your child to help them with their skills. Your child should be reading to you, you may help with difficult words but they are in need of daily practice in order to become a better reader.

Reminder: Snack is everyday (10 minutes), please, no juice pouches/boxes in the school bag.

Check the Friday folder for all test scores.)We will have a math test today on the numbers 1,4,5 and making towers.

Weekly Update for Sept.6-9, 2011

Important information: I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend! Thanks for getting all the important papers back so quickly. Snack is going very well and it is a nice afternoon break.

Just a reminder: Do not to send a juice pouch or box in a backpack because they often break and ruin whatever is inside the backpack. Please send drinks in separate lunch boxes or bags to be carried safely away from school supplies.

Picture day is Friday. Dress code still applies for picture day; refer to the handbook for any questions.

Homework is an important part of your child's success. Thank you for signing the math homework sheets and helping your child to be successful. This week we will have a spelling test and a reading test so be sure to review the words in the green notebook and to practice the story each night.
